Markella is a Greek-Norwegian artist who has created a musical universe where Nordic, synth-based pop meets Greek elements in the form of language, folk tunes, and tonal colors. In 2022 and 2023, she released three singles, “Burn Again,” “Hide Away,” and “No One Hurts Me Like I Hurt Myself,” which received a great response from listeners worldwide. The songs gained both national and international attention, being featured on Spotify editorial playlists such as New Music Friday Japan, as well as receiving radio play on P3 and reviews like “Are we talking about the catchiest chorus of the year, already in March?” (Best Right Now, NRK P3). As of now, the three songs have accumulated more than 2.3 million streams on Spotify alone.
The fourth single, “Chaos,” was released on September 6, 2024, and the song deals with the feeling of emptiness that suddenly one day erases everything that once was. It explores feelings of meaninglessness and confusion. And when everything one once knew disappears, chaos takes over. The song gained significant attention both domestically and internationally, and was featured on Spotify editorials such as New Music Friday Norway and Denmark, Hits Don’t Lie, Smil., Ny Pop, Fresh Finds Nordics, and ung, dum & lovende – in addition to radio play on P3, a 5-star review in Dagsavisen, and positive coverage in both Norwegian and international newspapers and blogs.
The week after “Chaos” was released, she took the stage at a packed BLÅ during by:Larm in Oslo, and the magazine puls. wrote:
“Markella gives a concert experience that can be summarized as: cool, chills, and incredibly fun.”
Markella about her own music:
“I’ve always loved listening to music that makes me feel broken and euphoric at the same time. And that’s exactly what I want my own music to feel like. I hope it helps the tears, I hope it makes you dance, and I hope it feels like a warm hug when needed. My music is for crying at the club, or dancing in your room.”
